Crowdfunding 101: Tools and Strategies for Creative Fundraising
A 3-part class series teaching how to plan, launch, and run a successful crowdfunding campaign. The class series provides students with a solid foundation in how crowdfunding works and what makes a campaign successful, along with a wealth of useful tools and real-world tested strategies. At the end of the series, students participating in all three sessions will have what they need to produce a campaign-ready crowdfunding plan.
Part I: Fundamentals & Groundwork
This
lecture covers the basics and social psychology of crowdfunding as well
as the groundwork needed to prepare for crowdfunding. We look at project
planning and budgeting, and tools and metrics for assessing your
capacity to raise funds. We also explore the different types of
crowdfunding approaches and the narratives that work for them, and how
to build a team and select a platform that serves your campaign.
Part II: Planning, Running, & Closing a Campaign
This
lecture covers the details of planning and running a campaign, including
tools and timelines for planning, setting up backer rewards that work
for you, building a compelling narrative around your campaign, and
guidelines for creating effective campaign videos. The class also covers
strategies for launching and soft-launching, effective marketing,
keeping momentum up during a campaign, what to do if your campaign hits a
wall, and things to know at and after closing a successful campaign.
Part III: Campaign Planning Workshop
The third part is a practical workshop session recorded during the live presentation of this class in April 2018. This class session covers several real-world examples of different types of crowdfunding projects. Students presented their crowdfunding plans and ideas, and we provided advice and practical strategy improvements to help hone their projects for success.
